Welcome to the Retinoblastoma Center of Houston

Doctors and researchers from four Texas Medical Center institutions have joined together in the fight against retinoblastoma, a childhood cancer of the eye.

The result of their collaboration is the Retinoblastoma Center of Houston, which includes experts from Texas Children’s Cancer Center, the Children’s Cancer Hospital at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Methodist Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.

Together these specialists pioneer advancements in treating and curing retinoblastoma through ground-breaking research and the development of innovative therapies.

The Retinoblastoma Center of Houston is the only center of its kind in the southwest United States. All patients have access to a multidisciplinary team consisting of the following: ocular oncologist, pediatric oncologist, ophthalmic pathologist, cancer geneticist, genetic counselor, radiation oncologist, interventional radiologist, nurse practitioner, nurse coordinator and social worker. The Center has access to proton beam radiation therapy in addition to brachytherapy. Therapies considered for every patient include intra-arterial chemotherapy, intravitreal chemotherapy, systemic chemotherapy, laser therapy, cryotherapy, enucleation, and radiation therapy. In children with widely metastatic disease, we offer therapies which include autologous stem cell transplant.

Patients of the Retinoblastoma Center of Houston are seen at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center or Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Pathology is conducted at Houston Methodist Hospital Research Institute. A central nurse coordinator receives all referrals and schedules patients at either the Children’s Cancer Hospital at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center or Texas Children’s Cancer Center on a rotating basis. The team of physicians sets a treatment plan and comes together from each institution to review the progress of patients.
